How to Shop for

Patterns and Prints

“Whether striped, polka-dotted, or floral, a pattern instantly tells us something character-defining about the person who wears it. Embrace the power of pattern and print!”

—Carol Burnett, award-winning actress, comedian, singer, and writer

• The scale of a print should be proportionate to your size.

• Don’t go for polka dots, flowers, or any other motif that is larger than your palm. You will get lost in it.

• Base your purchasing decision on the most dominant color of a pattern and not on the less prominent hues. To determine the dominant color, try squinting and blurring your eyes.

• If the pattern on an item is made up of 75 percent of your most flattering colors, consider purchasing it, but never invest in accessories or coordinating items in the less-flattering tones.

• If you are experimenting with pattern for the first time, the best first step is to try a tone-on-tone, in a color that always gets you the most compliments.

• By going beyond stripes and checks, you may discover that gentler patterns like confetti and watercolor designs connect with your personality better.

• Base the contrast level of a print on your own coloring. Never purchase a muted pattern if you have highly contrasted coloring such as pale skin and dark hair, or a high-contrast print if your personal coloring is more blended.

• The reason a pattern does not quite work might have nothing to do with the colors or design but rather the contrast level. If thoughts of pumping up or blending your makeup enter your mind when you try it on, this is most probably the case.

• Prints or patterns paired with neutrals will always work.

• Don’t purchase something in a pattern that at first glance reminds you of any sort of service uniform. You will never want to wear it.

• Shop a micro stripe, plaid, or check to add texture to your wardrobe and ensure that you are wearing a pattern that will not dominate you, no matter how vibrant.

• Don’t be afraid to mix prints or patterns. Just make sure they are complementary and choose one print or pattern to be the leader.

• When shopping for patterns to mix together, select smaller ones to wear closest to your face. This will ensure that the head-to-toe combination will never wear you.

• Polka dots and stripes can pair well together.
